Litigate Freely

On March 29, 2026, SFLC.in celebrated Document Freedom Day 2026 in collaboration with The Document Foundation, bringing together conversations on digital freedom and the role of open technologies in our everyday lives.

Mr. Jaskaran Singh representing JP Lotus at the Document Freedom Day 2026 had the opportunity to speak and share his experience of using open source software in litigation, and how JP Lotus ensures to use only open source and privacy respecting technologies for processing the data of their clients.

His talk was titled "Litigate Freely: Challenges of using Open Source Software in Litigation".

The talk explored the daily challenges faced by advocates who use free and open source, and privacy first software in litigation, and the cost associated with the same.

Last Sunday, we hosted the Document Freedom Day 2026 meetup at our office, organised by Software Freedom Law Center, India (SFLC.in) along with The Document Foundation. It turned into one of those evenings where conversations stay with you. The discussions touched on how the work we create, documents, reports, and data can lose control when locked into proprietary formats, and how Open Document Format (ODF) helps keep ownership where it belongs. We also explored open-source alternatives like LibreOffice and OnlyOffice. A closer look at OpenStreetMap, this community-driven, open-source mapping platform, offers a privacy-respecting way to navigate and engage with the world around us. The conversation also highlighted the real-world challenges of using open-source tools in legal and litigation processes, and why data ownership is not just a technical concern but a rights issue. The evening closed with an open-source themed game and cake-cutting, because celebrating digital freedom should feel exactly like that: a celebration. It was the kind of day that quietly shifts your perspective. #DocumentFreedomDay #OpenSource #LibreOffice #OnlyOffice #DigitalRights #OpenStandards #TechCommunity #DataPrivacy #DelhiTech #CommunityFirst #DocumentFoundation #Event #meetup

Yesterday, on 29th March, SFLC.in celebrated Document Freedom Day 2026 in collaboration with the The Document Foundation, bringing together conversations on digital freedom and the role of open technologies in our everyday lives. The discussions covered what open source means and the work we do at SFLC.in, followed by engaging sessions on how free and open software can support litigation processes, and how tools like OpenStreetMap can be integrated into our day-to-day activities and lifestyles. We were also joined by an alumnus from the Digital Defenders Network, adding valuable perspective to the conversations. We wrapped up with an interactive game on free software, making the conversation around digital rights both accessible and engaging. At SFLC.in, we continue to explore how open standards and free software can empower individuals and strengthen digital freedoms LibreOffice #DocumentFreedomDay #DFD2026 #OpenSource #FreeSoftware #DigitalFreedom #OpenStandards #TechForGood #AccessToKnowledge #SFLCin #DigitalRights #OpenData #LibreOffice #OpenTech #DigitalDefendersNetwork
